What do you think?

I'm not sure how I feel about this one.  I mean, on the one hand, I love it, because when I took it yesterday, the sunlight was coming out of the sky in such an angle that it made me feel like God was enveloping him in in His love.  But I don't know that I did a good job of capturing that.  I'm sure with some editing, I could get it right, but I don't really know how to edit.  Any ideas? Thoughts?

I like the light, and I like where he is in the frame. I don't even mind that he's out of focus. I might try to soften up the tree with a little blur, just because it's so sharp and he's so soft.

Something I just learned, if you're interested, is that if you're trying to take a shot where the subject is backlit like this, you can use your hand to shield the camera from the sun so the autofocus can do its job, and then remove your hand and press the button down the rest of the way to take the picture. I haven't tried it, but it makes sense to me.

I'll have to print this out and read the instructions while I try it.

I knew he would be out of focus - I liked that about it. Go fig. But I thought the rays were going to be more prevalent. *shrug*

Ooooh, but I totally see what you mean about the tree! You're right. Do you do all your editing in photoshop? Maybe I'll take a photoshop course after my digital photography course. :-/

Just pretend you're blocking the sun out of your eyes while you focus. That's all.

If you want the whole shot to be out of focus (which can be a very cool thing, and I think would be really pretty in a shot like this), switch your lens to manual focus. Then you can control what happens, instead of the auto-focus finding whatever it wants to focus on.

Yeah, I use Photoshop Elements 8. It's pretty easy to use. Much easier than full Photoshop.

i also like the shot. i agree with amy, i would soften up the tree. this shot would also look GORGEOUS in b&w and then add a little shadow to it. believe it or not, adding that shadow will darken up the background tree and make the rays appear more prevalent on his face. i think that is the effect that you are trying to achieve.

oh, i use gimp as my editor because it's free and works perfectly for now. i also edit a lot in google picasa (shhhhh, don't tell anyone)! i love this program and can do some serious work in it. my routine is picasa first and then gimp...works like a dream!

Samantha, I tried emailing you, but I don't know how to do that. *bangs head on desk*

So I tried to find a "shadow" feature in picnik, but all I found was "drop shadow" which refers more to the border than the pic. Not sure if that's what you meant. Help?

:)
